22/11/16 Potential materials

I've been thinking about potential materials, we're going to need a semi transparent material to project on. I'm not 100% sure what colour yet, but I like the idea of black, white or grey, something plain.

I also drew up a rough sketch of what I think our construction should look like;

TEST SHOTS

Thought I'd mess around with some test shots to get a feel for how I want the edit to look.

These were filmed on my macbook Photo Booth so the quality is awful- but its just for practise.

I tried to portray different personalities, but I feel like it looks more like different emotions. I think for it to be more effective I should of changed my hair/outfit/makeup.
This means our actor will need to be willing to change their look. I think out actor should perhaps have longish hair so we can style and play around with it more.
If we plan on projecting one personality at a time, each clip will need to be much longer & slower.

I also made another edit where all the clips are sped up 20x. (again awful quality)

I like how 'erratic' this one looks. I think its a bit more obvious that this one is representing personalities rather than emotions, because the speed and lack of control makes it seem as if the 'personalities' are taking over.

Audio ideas;
  • voice over from each personality
  • Music, mood music- quite slow, gentle/ or heavy & dark

Tutorial Feedback/ Plan of action for next week

I was really happy with the feedback we received today. Our idea isn't very developed yet but what we've come up with so far seems to be successful. I think we need to conduct a lot more research into our topic before we set our production into motion.

Something that could be a problem is the ethics of our piece.

I'm pretty confident with how we are planning to construct our installation and Peter seemed to like the idea too. Researching other artists is crucial at this point, this should help us develop a stronger and clearer idea.
Sometime this week we are going to visit galleries, and search around for exhibits similar to ours for some inspiration. We're also planning on looking at potential materials to project onto, after we buy a few different types we are going to film some test shots & project them onto a plain white wall/board.

Plan of action for week commencing: 21/11

  • Art gallery visit's
  • Loads of research
  • Try out loads of different materials
  • Look at potential projection spaces
  • Test shots
  • Create a small construction model
  • Look for potential actors

17/11/16

Second group meeting;

  • Working on statement of intent - FINISHED
  • Idea development
  • Potential visit to St Pauls Cathedral to see Bill Viola's work
  • Gallery visits- monday or thursday
Projection Ideas
  • Material will be landscape
  • projecting in a dark room
  • 4-7 sheets of material - meaning we need to experiment with 4-7 different personalities
  • one actor, different personalities. Only one personality will be projected at a time
  • shutter effect for the transition between each personality  - like picture slideshows in galleries
  • different durations for each personality, i.e rage changes really quickly, but spiritual takes a bit longer
  • potentially draw on pieces of material (disclosure album covers) with paints or pens, create a more abstract feel to it

Inspiration

My main inspiration for this project was a piece of work by Bill Viola called The Veiling.
I think this piece perfectly represents the image I have in my head. What strikes me most about this piece is the use of suspended material as the backdrop for the projection. I've been wanting to play around with mixed media and projection so I am really excited about this project.

When I showed the rest of the group The Veiling they all agreed it was a strong piece to reference to. My research from here on will mostly be based around this piece.
I know that Bill Viola's work is featured at St Pauls Cathedral, so we've planned to visit on Monday (21st). This trip will be very useful for research and will hopefully spark up many more creative ideas.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (multiple personality disorder)

Dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder)

http://www.webmd.boots.com/mental-health/dissociative-identity-disorder
With dissociative identity disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder, a person may have different identities controlling their thoughts and behaviour at different times.
Dissociative identity disorder may stem from emotional problems or trauma or abuse earlier in life.
Dissociative identity disorder is characterised by the presence of two or more distinct or split identities or personality states that continually have power over the person's behaviour. With dissociative identity disorder, there's also an inability to recall key personal information that is too far-reaching to be explained as mere forgetfulness.
The "alters" or different identities have their own age, sex, or race. Each has his or her own postures, gestures, and distinct way of talking. Sometimes the alters are imaginary people; sometimes they are animals. As each personality reveals itself and control's the individuals' behaviour and thoughts, it's called "switching". Switching can take seconds to minutes to days. When under hypnosis, the person's different "alters" or identities may be very responsive to the therapist's requests.
Along with the dissociation and multiple or split personalities, people with dissociative disorders may experience any of the following symptoms:

  1. Depression
  2. Mood swings
  3. Suicidal tendencies
  4. Sleep disorders ( insomnia, night terrors, and sleep walking)
  5. Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias (flashbacks, reactions to stimuli or "triggers")
  6. Alcohol and drug abuse
  7. Compulsions and rituals
  8. Psychotic-like symptoms (including auditory and visual hallucinations)
  9. Eating disorders.
